It’s likely/ It could be

That when Leonard Bernstein,

At his piano bench…

It was very late when he,

In a creative trance,

Had opened an envelope

From a Mr. Stephen Sondheim,

And started to work on

A musical phrasing for

“There’s a place for us”,

He eyedropped a gold teardrop

Into a test tube, & heaven reacted,

& now can make me ache

20,000 late nights after

Happy birthday, Mr.Stephen Sondheim

OFF/ ON

I have staved off   lost passions

I’ve held on cold cliff holds

I stayed and endured elements,

Harsh and all part of a hard whole

Where   lost passions

Sounding far, in the fog,

Meaning more in a quiet man

Than a kind word,

Can  work

To urge  his stoic stand

pray, tell

There’s a pretty way to spell out

                                  my long sentence.

If random luck holds out perhaps

The power, like lightening

                                 stabbing down my stance,

I’ll light up  dark dancing

X rayed in a cartoon.

Man, I’ll be lit up like a mantle

                                      in a lantern soon.

Windfall clarity should scare me.

If I should flinch when I have by chance

An unscrambled avalanche

Doled out again as an hour old

Soulful  pillow  rain, I’ll miss when

The words come,

Spilling the spaces.

I ain’t nervous of naked undersurfaces
